A Computational Model for Monitoring Water Quality and Ecological Impacts in Marine Environments
نویسندگان
چکیده
Multiquadric method is employed for solving the two dimensional depth-integrated water quality model and the eutrophication model in marine environments. The models simulate the spatial and temporal variations of nutrients in the Tolo Harbour of Hong Kong by taking considerations of the tidal current, wind stress, growth dynamics of phytoplankton and the transformation rate of nutrients. The phyto-plankton biomass is measured indirectly by using the concentration of chlorophyll-a as an indicator for algae abundance. The Multiquadric scheme has shown to be comparably stable in computational results and eeective in the elimination of the unexpected negative predictions of pollutants concentration in the boundary regions. Details of boundary loading of innow pollutants, data requirements for the modelling set up and calibration are discussed. Agreement is exhibited between the simulated results and the eld data.

Priority Parameters for Monitoring of Freshwater and Marine Systems, and Their Measurement
This paper describes the priority parameters for water quality monitoring currently used by a wide range of government, educational and private agencies in a variety of aquatic systems. Water quality monitoring has become a global priority to ensure that the economic, ecological and recreational value of natural and man-made waterways are sustained. Priority parameters will differ depending on ...
متن کاملMarine cage culture and the environment: effects on water quality and primary production
Increasing human population and reliance on aquaculture for seafood will lead to expansion of the industry in the open ocean. To guide environmentally sustainable expansion, coastal stakeholders require tools to evaluate the risks that marine aquaculture poses and to craft science-based policies and practices which safeguard marine ecosystems. We summarized current knowledge regarding dissolved...
متن کاملKnowledge Extraction from the Neural ‘Black Box’ in Ecological Monitoring
Phytoplankton biomass within the Saginaw Bay ecosystem (Lake Huron, Michigan, USA) was characterized as a function of select physical/chemical indicators. The complexity and variability of ecological systems typically make it difficult to model the influences of anthropogenic stressors and/or natural disturbances. Here, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were developed to model chlorophyll a con...
متن کاملA synthesis of dominant ecological processes in intensive shrimp ponds and adjacent coastal environments in NE Australia.
One of the key environmental concerns about shrimp farming is the discharge of waters with high levels of nutrients and suspended solids into adjacent waterways. In this paper we synthesize the results of our multidisciplinary research linking ecological processes in intensive shrimp ponds with their downstream impacts in tidal, mangrove-lined creeks. The incorporation of process measurements a...
متن کاملArtificial Neural Network Modeling for the Management of Oil Slick Transport in the Marine Environments
Due to an increase in demand of petroleum products which are transported by vessels or exported by pipelines, oil spill management becomes a controversial issue in coastal environment safety as well as making serious financial problems. After spilling oil in the water body, oil spreads as a thin layer on the water surface. Currents, waves and wind are the main causes of oil slick transport. The...
